More important, he meets the librarian in charge of the photo-copying machine, Miss R. Montague. With everything coming up roses, Richards is beaten up by thugs outside a pub. He recovers from this attack, but continues to suffer from nightmares stemming from his experiences as a pilot in Vietnam. Life is good while he is awake, but he knows that soon after he has settled into sleep he will awaken sweating, convinced that his aircraft is about to crash. Just before Richards father dies, the old man makes a startling confession about something that happened long before, in a previous war. This is a story about guilt, revenge, and the limits of forgiveness. About the Author: H. R. Coursens The Wilderness was recently published by Just Write Books. His novel, The End of Archerland, and his book of poems, Maine Seasons, with photographs by John Schwartz, will appear later in 2005.
